Pipeline Safety Tip of the Month – November 1, 2024

PHMSA and state pipeline safety inspectors are taught to review overpressure protection test records for all inputs to a natural gas system.  Today, that could include:

  • Multiple natural gas suppliers
  • Landfill gas
  • Dairy biogas
  • Etc.

Often when I inspected natural gas operators, these overpressure protection (OPP) records would not have been gathered as part of the OPP records for the inspector’s review.  Sometimes the inspections were never done.  Even if the operator being inspected does not own the OPP device protecting their system from overpressure from the incoming gas source, the operator must obtain those records for review since the records demonstrate protection of their system.
